March 13th marks a vital day for commemorating and honoring our nation's K-9 Veterans. K-9s play a crucial role in law enforcement and military operations. They have saved lives on numerous occasions, actively ensuring the safety of communities, and countries alike.
One of our partners, Project K-9 Hero, works to provide the best quality of life for our nation’s retired Military Working Dogs and Police K-9 Heroes. Playing such an important role for our nation, this day serves to recognize the diligent effort of these furry heroes.
National K-9 Veteran's Day
K-9 Veterans Day was started by a Vietnam War veteran from Jacksonville, Florida, named Joe White. White worked closely with K-9 working dogs, and at the end of their working lives, White became aware and saddened by the euthanasia that inevitably ended these hero's lives.
White instilled National K-9 Veteran's Day as a way to honor, and bring awareness to the endless hard work, and bravery these animals displayed.
What makes military dogs special?
Military dogs are outstanding for a plethora of reasons but a few are important to take note of;
- Military dogs have ranks, that are usually higher than their handler's to ensure proper care and treatment.
- Military Dogs have served with U.S. soldiers since the Revolutionary War.
- K-9s have an immaculate sense of smell. They can smell up to 100,000 times stronger than a human.
- Some K-9's have been trained to jump from planes to aid with bringing soldiers to safety.
